I'm back at school for the fall quarter. Finally. Summer was great and I met some of the most amazing people, but I was seriously ready to be back and bury myself in my work again.
My first photo assignment is "food." That's the only criteria I was given. So I decided to work with sugar. I've watched pastry chefs from all over the world compete on the food network and make all those really great sculptures out of sugar... and I thought I would try my hand. Surprisingly, the sugar worked out rather well. I was terrified because I had to heat the stuff to over 300 degrees Farenheight without the sugar caramelizing, or (more importantly) burning my house down. Of course I'm not skilled enough to actually make something, and this was my first attempt so I stuck with the abstract theme. I made this sculpture and used some blue food coloring within it... I think it's interesting how it resembles glass or water that's been frozen in time. The sugar itself was so interesting to work with... at the right temperature it didn't burn my fingers, yet I could stretch and twist it to morph it into shape.
In the photograph I decided to use a white background so the viewer can see the details of the texture as well as the color. I also backlit the sculpture so that there was a black line / white line to it. Hopefully in the future, there are more opportunities for me to use sugar as a prop.
